Since 2005. Market yourself. Find better work. Make a name. Survive Layoffs. Be successful.

Monday

Are you really happy in your job?
Do you have a career plan or are you waiting for your job to provide one?
Is there where you saw yourself twenty years ago?
Are you satisfied? Are you elated? Do you love your life? Do you love others around you?
Are you passionate about what you do and where you are?

Marketing Me is about my journey to promote myself as an expert and necessary asset to any organization.
A day in September. I had two hours to clean out my desk. I could keep my computer for another day or so to get my contacts and email off loaded. I would get two months pay and my health insurance would be company funded for another three weeks, after that I could go on COBRA and continue month to month.

It wasn't a bad deal as far as layoffs go, but that's all on paper. Getting laid off is a kick in the balls (or teeth, whatever). It sucks and it is meant to be that way.

Getting fired means you did something wrong.. some violation of society's or the company's rules.

Getting laid off means you are worthless. Your presence is no longer needed in the building and your car is taking up space in the parking lot. Someone else needs your chair, computer, salary and the air you are breathing. Go away so someone better can do your work. Go away because you are a failure, are creating more failures and are responsible for the failure of this company. Go away and don't come back.

For me, that day in September should have been all that and more. After all, I had been laid off from another company only three years before. And before that, I know I had been let go of at least two or three other jobs for no good reason other than "We don't need you anymore".

That day in September should have been the beginning of my personal disintegration. On the contrary.

On that day I began marketing of the brand called Me.

I know, it sounds goofy. But listen to this.

Within two weeks of that fateful day, I had two job offers. In three weeks, I had seven. Within the month, I had a new job paying more than my old position with better benefits and still close to home.

Suddenly, I was needed and wanted.

Months later, I still get calls to see if I am interested in joining another company. I am happier than I was before and do what I love. I have rediscovered the joy and love of my family and look forward to each day.

In this day of downsizing, offshoring, and outsourcing, it is time to stop investing in others and begin marketing in yourself.

Here is what I did....
